German car giant Audi has become the sole owner of the Sauber F1 team by purchasing 100% of its shares.
Audi, which acquired a minority stake in the Sauber F1 team in 2023, initially announced that it would purchase 75% of the team. However, it was announced that the new goal would be to own 100% of the team in 2024.
Audi completed this process by purchasing all of Sauber before completely changing the team’s identity to Audi in 2026. Although no official statement has been made, the purchase is estimated to be around €600 million.
Audi becomes sole owner of F1 project
“The closing took place in January. Audi is now 100% owner of Sauber Holding AG, the parent company of the team,” an Audi spokesperson told PlanetF1.com.
The news of Audi’s full acquisition of Sauber comes after the team announced its new driver lineup for the 2025 F1 season. The team, which parted ways with Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas at the end of last season, will make a fresh start with Nico Hülkenberg and Formula 2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto in the 2025 F1 season.
Audi plans to compete in F1 by producing its own engine in the 2026 season and will benefit from both Sauber’s infrastructure and experience in the process. This acquisition is seen as an important step for the brand’s long-term success plan in Formula 1.
