Fernando Alonso is confident Aston Martin will be a stronger team at the start of the 2025 F1 season, with the Spaniard highlighting the lessons learned from last year’s difficult final season.
The two-time F1 world champion Alonso said the Silverstone-based team will bring the lessons learned from the recent struggles to its new car.
Aston Martin has had an inconsistent period under the current regulations. After a slow start to 2022, the team improved throughout the season, and a significant step was taken during the winter to ensure Alonso was consistently competing for the podium in his first half of 2023.
However, despite six podiums in the first eight races of 2023, performances have again declined.
Inconsistent Performance
The team was consistently in the top five teams throughout the season, but its form declined again towards the end of 2024.
Alonso is therefore aiming to use the second half of 2024 as a foundation and a springboard for next season.
“It goes up and down for everybody. Difficult to be sure of that, but I think we didn’t manage to improve the car much throughout the season.
“So we started quite strong, but we are now in a position that we’re struggling to be in Q3 on some occasions.”
The Lessons of Last Season’s Slump
Alonso scored points in just five of the last 10 races of 2024, while teammate Lance Stroll failed to score at all in 11 races dating back to the summer break.
Despite this, Alonso insisted that last season’s poor finish provided important lessons that could propel the team forward.
“But, at the same time, all those difficulties probably are teaching us a lot of lessons, which we will apply into next year’s car.”
“And that will be probably the biggest positive aspect of the second part of the year, that even if we didn’t succeed in putting much performance on the car, I think it’s well understood what we are struggling with at the moment. So that will be applying in 2025.”
