Michael Schumacher was seriously injured in a skiing accident in France on December 29, 2013, beginning a life-changing era.

Schumacher, who competed in 306 races in a 19-season Formula One career and whose most serious injury was a leg fracture, suffered a tragic accident a year into his retirement. The legendary pilot, who went off the piste while skiing in the Meribel region of France, lost his balance and hit his head on a rock.

The fact that he was wearing a helmet saved his life, but the German pilot suffered a serious head injury. He was placed in a medically induced coma in a hospital in Grenoble and was awakened in the summer of 2014 and taken to his home in Switzerland. Since then, he has not appeared in public and has been living in intensive care under the supervision of his family.

Corinna Schumacher: “Michael is always with us”

In the 2021 Schumacher documentary, his wife Corinna and children Mick and Gina shared their feelings about the crash for the first time.

Corinna, “Of course I miss Michael every day. But it’s not just me, our children, his parents, his father and everyone around him miss him,” he said. “Everyone misses Michael, but Michael is here. In a different way, but he is here and that gives us strength.” He said.

Speaking about the treatment Schumacher received at home, Corinna continued as follows:

“We are doing therapy, we are doing everything we can to make Michael better and make him feel comfortable. We want to make him feel part of our family. I will continue to do everything no matter what. We all will.”

Corinna also emphasized their sensitivity in protecting Michael’s private life, “Michael always said ‘private is private’. Now we are protecting him.”

In the footsteps of Schumacher: #KeepFightingMichael

The Schumacher family has chosen to share limited information about Michael’s health since the accident. But the legendary pilot’s legacy lives on through philanthropic projects through the Keep Fighting Foundation.

Legendary Ferrari boss Jean Todt, one of the closest people to Schumacher’s family, continues to visit him and says they watch Grand Prix from time to time. His brother Ralf Schumacher expressed his feelings by saying, “I miss my Michael”.

The revelation that an interview with Schumacher, allegedly published by a magazine in 2023, was faked and created by artificial intelligence also caused a great stir. After the scandal, the magazine editor was dismissed and the family was apologized to.

A Legacy Full of Records

With seven Formula One World Championships, Michael Schumacher has achieved one of the greatest feats in sport. Schumacher holds many records that still remain unbroken, such as five consecutive championships, and to this day he remains a part of F1 history.

Schumacher’s name lives on through a unique legacy in sport and humanitarian projects. For those who loved him and for his fans, the slogan #KeepFightingMichael remains a symbol of struggle and solidarity.
